"The variety of corners and the very high-speed nature of Spa-Francorchamps makes it a great race track that challenges not only the drivers but also the engineers. On the one hand you have the La Source hairpin which is taken at only 60 kmh, on the other the Blanchimont corner which is taken at more than 300 kmh. Despite this disparity in speed the overall lap speed average is around 230 kmh in qualifying. This means that the car's set-up must take into account the absolute need for stability in the very fast and medium-speed corners, and also the need for mechanical traction to deal with the slower parts of the course such as the revised Bus Stop chicane and La Source."
"Just to complicate this compromise further you have the Eau Rouge corner at the end of the fast downhill plunge from the hairpin. It is the most demanding corner in racing and requires complete commitment from the driver, and perfect behavior from the car. The problem it poses is not just the fact that it is taken flat-out in top gear by the best drivers, but also that the car bottoms out as it reaches the lowest part of the corner just prior to the dramatic uphill sweep Raidillion. Finally, you also have to take into account the notoriously capricious weather in the Hautes Fagnes region."
