Few mishaps signaled the start of the morning session as the weather was cold and damp rather than the wet of the last few days. Williams' Antonio Pizzonia experienced engine problems as did the Renault of Jenson Button, while Sauber's Felipe Massa was fastest early on with a 1.26.540 ahead of Williams' Marc Gene and Sauber team mate Nick Heidfeld.

17 drivers were present for the day and by lunchtime the weather improved to sunny. Luca Badoer was on duty for Ferrari while Luciano Burti headed off to the team's home track at Fiorano. Olivier Panis took over the new BAR004 after Jacques Villeneuve's departure, along with Anthony Davidson in the BAR003. Mika Salo took to the track in the new Toyota but experienced mechanical problems and by the end of the morning session McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen headed the time sheets with a 1.20.069.

Jaguar's Eddie Irvine swapped cars with team mate Pedro de la Rosa, exchanging the new R3 for the R2C, completing 50 laps and ending up topping the times by the end of the day with 1.19.252, one tenth of a second ahead of Raikkonen. Badoer set the third fastest time ahead of Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya and McLaren's Alex Wurtz.

While Jaguar, McLaren, Ferrari, Williams and Sauber took the top seven times, the Jordan of Giancarlo Fisichella was the best of the rest with a 1.20.704.
