David Richards, British American Racing's team principal, has said that he'd like to get to know driver Jacques Villeneuve better.

Richards and Villeneuve had a rocky start to their association when Richards replaced Craig Pollock as head of BAR. Pollock is Villeneuve's friend and manager and at the launch of the BAR004 in December 2001, when Richards' appointment was announced, it was apparent that the Canadian was not happy with the turn of events.

It was speculated that Villeneuve would leave BAR before the start of this season -- both he and Pollock have been linked with Renault -- but since testing the new car he seems intent on staying put.

Richards says they both want to win, which will not be easy, but they stand a better chance of achieving their goals if they work together.

"I don't know Jacques very well, but I would like to." He said. "I will be making the same level of effort that I am sure he will be making to ensure we all play our part in the team. We all have a role to play, and we're all committed to winning. We know that won't come easily. Honda know it won't come easily. So I think we have a hard year ahead of us and possibly a couple of hard years ahead of us. It was very important psychologically for Jacques to know that the team are moving forward. And it is very important for the team to have his commitment because at the end of the day we are all in the same boat."
