ARGENTINE GRAND PRIX - RACE DAY ===============================
The West McLaren Mercedes team started the 600th Grand Prix in tenth and seventeenth positions having had a frustrating weekend. A first corner accident removed David Coulthard from the race, Mika however, continued to finish in a strong fifth position. Today's result puts the West McLaren Mercedes team in a second position in the Constructor's Championship (19 points) just one point behind Williams, with David and Mika in second and fourth positions in the Drivers' Championships respectively.
MIKA HAKKINEN "Of course I am pleased to have finished fifth having started 17th on the grid. We could have done better and we will do so in the forthcoming races which I am looking forward to. But today it was our objective to finish in the points and that plan worked perfectly. Again, excellent work from the pit crew who kept up the momentum all the way through the weekend."
DAVID COULTHARD "I dropped a place at the start but managed to make it up as we exited the first corner. Then one of the Jordan's turned across me in order to avoid the skirmish between Barrichello and Michael Schumacher destroying the whole left hand front corner of my car. If there had been a red flag, as there was in Brazil, I would have been able to go out again in the spare car but this was not the case in this occasion."
RON DENNIS "Fifth position was the result of a good drive from Mika, the right race strategy and the correct tyre choice. I think we deserve the valuable two points. However, we should have done a better job in qualifying and we will not make the same mistakes again. David had a short race and who knows what the outcome would have been if he had not been involved in someone else's accident."
NORBERT HAUG "The race saw a better performance from our team than in the qualifying. It is a shame David was involved in the Barrichello/Schumacher incident but Mika did a good job scoring two points and finishing 30.2 seconds behind the race winner Villeneuve from 17th position on the grid."
