Fernando Alonso was cleared to go home after a big impact in today’s race. The Spaniard’s car bounced off the curbing while avoiding the car of Jean Eric-Vergne.

A medical alarm in his car was set off, due to the reportedly 28 G impact with the ground.

Alonso finished the event in 5th spot, and completed all his post race media obligations before heading to hospital as part of the FIA’s mandatory rules concerning safety.

“"I still have all my teeth," Alonso said after the race.

"The back is obviously a little bit painful because it was a big hit. We have the alarm on the chassis after a minimum of G-forces, this alarm for the medical car etc. Hopefully I am OK for Austin."

The incident was rather spectacular, as the Ferrari was merging back onto the track, and found himself next to the Toro Rosso of Vergne. He kept his foot in it, and attempted to make the pass on the outside.

"I was going out of the pit," Alonso said.

"I was alongside the Toro Rosso and I didn't have the space for us both on the track so at that point either you are invisible or you are forced to be out of the track. We have been forced a little bit but the rules say when you have a car alongside you, you cannot use the full width of the track. He used the full width of the track. I was forced to go out and I think it's clear."
