Leader from the first practice, Kimi Raikkonen held his best time of 1:19.012 initially and Mark Webber was the first to improve, up to second. The Australian shaved nine hundredths off team-mate Antonio Pizzonia, who was second fastest in the earlier session.

Toyota's Cristiano da Matta improved to fifth but most drivers were lapping below their previous times in the first fifteen minutes. Fernando Alonso was the next big improvement, the Renault man taking the top spot with a 1:17.670.

Team-mate Jarno Trulli went up to second fastest and the Toyota of Olivier Panis up to third. Rubens Barrichello took the second slot from Trulli, Michael Schumacher up to fourth and Jenson Button to seventh. David Coulthard was the only other improvement in position, taking seventh from Button.

An uneventful start to Saturday in Spain with no remarkable performances. Renault showed pace again, much as it did in yesterday's pre-qualifying session and both Jaguars in the top ten, but low-key all round. Final top eight classification: Alonso, Barrichello, Trulli, M. Schumacher, Panis, Raikkonen, Coulthard, Button.
