Fernando Alonso believes he had the pace to make it into Q2 after failing to complete a lap in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Spanish driver had another frustrating day after being hit by problems in FP2 on Friday, having to park his McLaren-Honda after just three corners in the first qualifying segment.

Despite the lack of running, Alonso believes he had the pace to reach Q2.

"It's not like we were too fast, but I think it was possible to go through to Q2," said Alonso.

"The car handled well during FP3 and on the three corners I managed, but we just couldn't finish it.

"Reliability continues to be a problem, so we'll start form the back and we'll see if we can finish the race."

Teammate Jenson Button also went out in Q1, completing another disappointing day for McLaren.

A philosophic Alonso said the struggle was expected as he continues to pin hopes on a return to form in 2016.

"We are not discovering anything new. The whole year has been like this and we know we have to be patient," he said.

"It's frustrating and disappointing now, first of all for ourselves, and for our fans, but they need patience because everything will change."
