Alonso makes his belated start to F1 2015 in Sepang this weekend, after missing the season-opening Australian Grand Prix due to his testing crash in Barcelona.

He says he feels underprepared for the season ahead, as Honda struggles to get on top of its new V6 hybrid turbo engine.

“Many things to learn for me,” said Alonso, “(It’s a) very challenging moment of my career, and I’m ready to take it.

“Happy to be here in another F1 season. I start one race later than I should, but unfortunately I had the accident in Barcelona, and following the recommendations by the doctors I missed the first race.

“I know it’s going to be very tough this year. Happy to be back in the cockpit, ready to enjoy the weekend. It was hard to watch the first race on TV, with the team not doing very well.”

After only 500km of testing, Alonso knows McLaren and Honda has a huge challenge ahead of them.

“We need to have our feet on the ground, we’re not in the position we wanted or the position we’ll hopefully be very soon,” he said.

“It will be like a test session for me, the first races. In this car I did more or less the same laps as another guy do in one day.

“I’m not confident with the car in this moment, and will I need to learn many things. Not only the driving style but also the approach that McLaren has to the weekends.”
