FROM SCHUMACHER TO HAMILTON
Just a few lines to bring to your attention the interview to Lewis Hamilton on the next number of Sportweek: on Saturday 17th you will find the Italian magazine with the interview that, I must say, I had the pleasure to make with the great British driver.
I have to admit that I did not feel too much like going to UK to talk with Lewis. This was mostly due to the logistic impediments since I was sure that once arrived at McLaren headquarters I would have certainly seen very interesting things. Gianluca Gasparini, RCA journalist, co-author of my autobiography and most of all great friend of mine, had a crucial role in persuading me to go there and I have to say that I am most grateful to him for this.
"Paragon" is the name of headquarters at Woking and, honestly, for any other Formula One team the comparison will be very hard. I have been amazed by the structure of McLaren's base, I cannot even describe it in words. I invite you to have a look on the internet for information on it as it is really astonishing. Taken note of this, I thought that the interview with Lewis would have been the highest added value to my trip, but in reality I found myself in front of a person who, beyond the personal affinity that had naturally arisen between the two of us since the beginning, he surprised me due to his exceptional maturity for his age. I understood that Lewis Hamilton is a real world-beater, he is the closest you can get to the model of man and driver that I tried to be as a boy and reasoning with him today as equals is something that I managed to do only thanks to that grain of wisdom that I got from my 42 (well, almost 43) years of age.
Envy is a human feeling and in the right measure it is also comically acceptable. This is what understandably can lead everyone of us to be a bit annoyed by a gesture of "sumptuous talent" made by one of your own kind in situations that we had faced with results that were objectively a lot poorer. Now I understand why, when Lewis lost the championship in 2007, I was not that sorry. After getting to know him and understanding the way he thinks and what took him to obtain what he achieved in his still young life, I "state" that destiny has been a real bas**rd when negating him the title he would have deserved at his debut.
Anyway, we talked about everything and, believe me, it has been a really precious and amusing experience. Summarising all the concepts emerged from our conversation in the little space available on the magazine has not been easy, but Gianluca managed to do that quite well. Therefore... make sure you do not miss it!
This is my second experience as a Journalist, after the interview with Michael Schumacher and, hoping that Ferrari's fans will not bear a grudge against me, I have to say that things went better and better!
Talk to you next time, ciaoooo.
