Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Nico Rosberg narrowly ahead of Lewis Hamilton in FP2
Nov 27, 2015, 3:54 PM

Nico Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton to the top spot in the second practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by just over 0.

Nico Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton to the top spot in the second practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by just over 0.1s in the twilight conditions.

Rosberg, who was second to his Mercedes teammate in the day’s opening practice session, set a time of 1m41.983 as the field used the supersoft tyres to perform qualifying simulations at the halfway point of the 90 minute session.

Hamilton had been quickest during the initial running in FP2 and improved his best time on the softer rubber, but still ended up 0.138s adrift of Rosberg.

Lewis Hamilton

Sergio Perez was third for Force India before a brake-by-wire failure caused his right-rear brake to catch on fire and he was forced to crawl back to the pits.

Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth for Red Bull having abandoned the upgraded Renault engine he used in Brazil, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Daniil Kvyat in fifth and sixth.

Kimi Raikkonen ended up seventh in the second Ferrari but the Finn did demonstrate strong long-run pace on the supersoft Pirelli tyre, which raised hopes that the Scuderia could challenge Mercedes in the race.

Kimi Raikkonen

Nico Hulkenberg ran strongly on the soft tyre in the second Force India and finished the session in eighth place, ahead of McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Pastor Maldonado, who rounded out the top ten.

Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa were 11th and 12th for Williams, with both drivers suffering huge lock-ups at Turn 17 towards the end of the session.

Max Verstappen ended up in 13th place, just ahead of his Toro Rosso teammate, Carlos Sainz, who stopped at the Turn 17 with smoke coming from his car after being told to switch off the engine with 30 minutes left on the clock.

Romain Grosjean

Romain Grosjean, who missed FP1 as his replacement at Lotus, Joylon Palmer, ran in that session was 15th in the second Lotus, ahead of Jenson Button and Felipe Nasr.

Marcus Ericsson was 18th in the second Sauber, with Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi bringing up the rear of the field for Manor.
