October 6th marks an important day in the history of the famous Fittipaldi family
Emerson Fittipaldi's racing resume is packed with achievements and triumphs. One of his biggest accomplishments came when he was crowned a Formula One World Champion in 1972. What was bigger than that? Well, winning it for a second time of course, which he achieved on this day, 40 years ago, in 1974.
In doing so, he joined a very exclusive list. Only Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, and Jackie Stewart had ever won multiple Formula One titles at the time. Since then, that list has grown and more legends have joined it with names such as Lauda, Piquet, Prost, Senna, Haikkinen, Schumacher, Alonso, and Vettel.
Quite a prestigious group. Emerson earned his second crown in the 1974 United States Grand Prix, a race he placed fourth in. That result was just enough to edge Clay Regazzoni in a classic McLaren vs. Ferrari battle.
As we continue to celebrate anniversaries of the legend, his grandchildren Pietro and Enzo continue to celebrate race victories and championships as they rocket their way up the racing ladder.
