Russell: "It was always challenging coming from the sprint race, the car felt very different. We made some changes that we need to review if it was the right direction. We pulled out the lap from nowhere, and it's a great feeling in such a challenging session.

"We made some changes based on the forecast for tomorrow, which may have hurt us a little bit for now. It took the car out of sync a little bit. Kimi was more competitive than I was in that session, but managed to re-dial my driving."

Top 10 in Q3

1. Russell
2. Antonelli
3. Norris
4. Piastri
5. Hamilton
6. Verstappen
7. Hadjar
8. Leclerc
9. Lindblad
10. Colapinto

Russell takes pole for the Canadian GP

It looked like we were in for a battle for pole, but Mercedes end up 1-2-ing it after leaving it late. Russell from Antonelli from Norris, once more.

Leclerc goes up to fourth, as Norris is just 0.083s shy of Antonelli.

Piastri can't beat him either, while Russell is improving too - and it's pole, by just 0.068s! Right at the death there.

Verstappen also improved late on, nudging ahead of Hadjar for sixth by just 0.03s. Hamilton had a moment out of Turn 6, and abandoned his lap.

And it's a 1m12.646s for Antonelli, and provisional pole is his! Can anyone beat him?

Russell gets a tow off Colapinto, attacks the chicane, and crosses the line...and it's only enough for third at the moment. Verstappen doesn't improve either, and he's only seventh.

What's Antonelli got? It's a purple first sector...

The pack now trickle out of the pits to get their second laps in; plenty of time to refresh and warm up the tyres. Russell's spooling up for his lap now, and indeed gets going.

Russell goes out again, so he's out of sync with the rest. The rest are in the pitlane, awaiting their second runs.

Russell abandons his lap, while Antonelli is about to do a time - it's only enough for fourth, however. Mercedes isn't dialled in here, and Russell says that he's not really got any rear grip. Suspicions that he got very close - if not touching - the wall.

"What's going on with this straight-line speed," Verstappen asks. He's 0.7s off the pace at the moment.

Verstappen's ahead of Hadjar in this first lap, although Piastri does a better middle sector than the Red Bulls.

It's a 1m13.473s for Verstappen, while Hadjar is half a second down.

Piastri posts a 1m13.003s, but Norris gets a 1m12.729s. Hamilton then gets second place for now.

Two preps for Verstappen and Hadjar then, and it looks like everyone else is following suit.

Here come the two Mercedes and Colapinto, so that's a full house on track. Now, one warm-up lap or two? That is the question.

Q3 begins

Verstappen is first in the queue, followed by Hadjar, the McLarens, the Ferraris, and Lindblad.

Hadjar did well too, surviving an almighty snap out of Turn 8 to get the fastest lap of Q2. Can he do it again in the top 10 shootout?

Leclerc isn't a happy bunny. "I'm completely off the pace, we just need to make sure, give me clean air. I don't care about whatever else, just clean air."

Colapinto, meanwhile, was very pleased to make Q3 once again. He looks like a new man!

Eliminated in Q2

11. Hulkenberg
12. Lawson
13. Bortoleto
14. Gasly
15. Sainz
16. Bearman

Bearman's crossed the line in 14th, he's out, as is Bortoleto - only 13th for him.

Leclerc's having another go to book some degree of safety, and that's eighth.

Gasly only gets 14th - so that's it for the Alpine driver, as Colapinto is safe in Q3 as Hulkenberg is not improving.

Russell's improving this time around, as Hamilton soaks up a slipstream from an Audi and goes top - 0.035s ahead of Antonelli.

Third fastest for Russell, while Verstappen can't improve and stays seventh.

Lawson moves up to 11th, so won't progress into Q3.

Hadjar goes fastest, first man into the 1m12s with a 1m12.975s.

Lawson opens his lap - he's not had great luck this weekend, with the hydraulics issue in practice. He's up to 13th, missing the Hulkenberg cut-off by about 0.4s.

Russell locks up at Turn 1, so he can't do much with that lap.

Meanwhile, Gasly's only 15th with his latest lap - so he needs a big effort to break the Q3 bracket.

Elimination zone with five minutes to go

11. Colapinto
12. Sainz
13. Bortoleto
14. Bearman
15. Gasly
16. Lawson

"I can't get the front tyres in the window," Verstappen reports, as he struggles with tyre warm-up.

Lawson hasn't done a lap yet, and locked his fronts - so he's doing another prep lap.

Hadjar bags second for now, 0.128s off Antonelli's effort. Lindblad now goes up to seventh.

Norris then gets a little closer to Antonelli, putting in a lap just 0.068s shy of the Italian's 1m13.076s.

Leclerc is finding time on this second lap, which is helpful since he's slipped into the bottom six. It's enough for ninth, which isn't great.

Leclerc is a full second off his team-mate after that effort.

Russell opens a lap but it's 'only' fourth, as Antonelli goes quickest - 0.159s ahead of Norris.

Hulkenberg goes up to seventh, while Verstappen's about to do his first proper lap - and it's enough for fifth.

Hadjar's up to a 1m13.623s on his first effort, which is beaten by Norris' 1m13.235s.

Piastri moves up to second, while Colapinto is 0.8s off Norris' current benchmark.

Hamilton then goes second, 0.035s off Norris this time around.

14/16 cars are on-track, as Sainz did an exploratory lap on old tyres before returning to the pits on fresh softs.

Colapinto does a 1m25.981s, which is very much "second prep lap" levels of speed.

Q2 begins

The two Alpines sit at the front of the queue, ahead of the McLarens.

Meanwhile the stewards have another busy day: plenty of "failed to follow race director's instructions" and a potential impeding moment between Hamilton and Gasly.

Eliminated in Q1

17. Ocon
18. Albon
19. Alonso
20. Perez
21. Stroll
22. Bottas

Bortoleto moves up to 16th again and puts Ocon into the bottom six. Albon isn't improving, so that's his lot for this session.

Bottas had a lock-up at Turn 1, so he never really got a final lap in, while Stroll went off at Turn 3 and just about saved his car from the wall.

Hamilton moves up to fifth, getting a third flyer out of those tyres.

Ocon moves up to 15th, so a few nervy moments as he waits for the others to improve. Alonso is out, only gets to 18th.

Hulkenberg shuffles Albon into the drop zone and goes 14th.

Leclerc moves up to fourth, as Piastri gets a tow from a Williams and moves up to third.

Bearman's missing a chunk of his bargeboard, with one of the elements waggling around.

Perez goes up to 18th, as Bortoleto moves up to 16th - just on the right side of the cut-off.

Elimination zone with three minutes to go

17. Ocon
18. Bortoleto
19. Alonso
20. Hulkenberg
21. Bottas
22. Stroll.

Norris moves up to second, 0.151s off Antonelli - also still on used tyres.

Gasly's about to get a lap in, and it's up to 10th.

Perez is getting looked at for ignoring race directors' instructions, so he clearly didn't follow the exit road at the chicane.

Hamilton moves up to fifth; they've stuck to used tyres here, and trying to buy some extra sets of softs for Q2 and Q3. They've got a few laps in them, it seems.

Leclerc is currently time-less, as his quickest lap was deleted for track limits. He's about to set a banker lap, and gets up to eighth.

Meanwhile, Lindblad's put on some fresh tyres and is going very quickly - and moves up to third with a purple first sector.

Gasly bails on his lap - it's been a tough weekend for him so far.

Verstappen goes quickest on a 1m14.067s, but Russell's going a bit quicker this time around. It's a 1m13.953s for him.

Antonelli then posts a 1m13.380s to slap his car into first place, as Hadjar goes second - 0.274s off the Italian. Plenty of track evolution here.

Hamilton moves up to sixth fastest on  his first effort, while Leclerc is 2s off the pace on his first lap so will need to go again.

Piastri moves up to second on his second effort, 0.008s off Norris' benchmark.

"I'm not sure why the ride feels worse than it did yesterday," Russell reports.

Verstappen posts a 1m14.609s, which is swiftly beaten by Norris' 1m14.213s. Colapinto is currently third, just over a tenth shy of Verstappen's effort.

Russell then goes up to second, 0.225s off Norris, while Antonelli just falls short of the reigning champion's lap - 0.015s adrift.

Albon kicks off a lap, while Piastri seems to have cracked on with opening qualifying with just one flyer - he's got used tyres on at the moment.

Indeed, it's a 1m15.105s to start the session. Lindblad is just two tenths off, with Bearman and Sainz half a second off Piastri.

Stroll's been noted for leaving the pits in an unsafe condition.

It's not particularly warm, with a track temp of 30C, so don't be surprised to see drivers doing more than one prep lap to build tyre temperature.

Plenty of cars on-track, so plenty of traffic to avoid.

Alonso has indeed been noted for an unsafe release.
