Two victories for Volkswagen drivers at Zandvoort
Wolfsburg (22 August 2010). Two victories and a total of four podium positions for Volkswagen at the sixth race weekend of the Formula 3 Euro Series: for the drivers "powered by Volkswagen" the visit to Zandvoort was extremely successful.
Edoardo Mortara (Italy) and Marco Wittmann (Germany) clinched positions one and three in Saturday's race, on Sunday the Portuguese Antonio Felix da Costa and Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) achieved a one-two win. Mortara thus continues to head the standings of the junior series with a commanding lead. With a score of 77 points, he has a 22-point advantage over his Signature team colleague Wittmann.
Mortara was the measure of all things in the first race on the Dutch dune circuit. After having started from the pole position, he managed an uncontested start-finish victory. It was his fifth in the current season. Marco Wittmann, who had started from the first row as well, lost one position at the start but finished on the podium as well, in third place. On Sunday, Antonio Felix da Costa and Laurens Vanthoor fought a captivating duel for victory. Felix da Costa from the partner team Motopark Academy, who thanks to an eighth-place finish in the first race had secured the pole position in the reverse starting order for the second round, beat the Belgian to the chequered flag by just 0.2 seconds. After the round at the Nurburgring this was Felix da Costa's second Sunday exploit in a row. Marco Wittmann in sixth place secured the last championship point in the second race. Edoardo Mortara on the other hand left empty-handed for the first time this season. The Italian was turned around by a rival in the early phase of the race which caused him to drop to the rear of the field. Despite setting some clearly faster times than the group of front runners on some of the laps he had to settle for eleventh place.
Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director: "The Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend at Zandvoort was another very successful one for Volkswagen, its teams and drivers. With a victory on Saturday, Edoardo Mortara has further extended his lead of the standings while Antonio Felix da Costa managed to do the same in the rookie classification thanks to his triumph in the second round. This means that we continue to have optimum changes of securing these titles."
#5 - Edoardo Mortara (Italy) - Volkswagen Dallara F309 -
Qualifying: 1st place - race 1: 1st place - race 2: 11th place
"The weekend had ups and downs for me. On Saturday I clinched another victory but on Sunday I wasn't able to score any points for the first time this season due to a collision, although my car was the quickest one in the field. Still, I managed to further extend my points advantage. If we continue running the way we did on Saturday it'll be difficult for the other drivers to catch up to me."
#6 - Marco Wittmann (Germany) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 -
Qualifying: 2nd place - race 1: 3rd place - race 2: 6th place
"Second place in qualifying was a better result than I'd expected. But because I had to start to the first race on the dirty side I lost one place. Afterwards I couldn't improve again because overtaking is nearly impossible here. I had a similar situation on Sunday. This doesn't make the title fight any easier for me. I need to think from race to race and try to clinch the best possible result each time."
#13 - Antonio Felix da Costa (Portugal) - Volkswagen
Dallara F308 - Team Motopark Academy
Qualifying: 9th place - race 1: 8th place - race 2: 1st place
"I'm very happy about having clinched victory again on Sunday. It was more difficult this time than it was at the Nurburgring because my car didn't have the optimum set-up. But fortunately overtaking is very difficult here. The main thing here was to drive consistently and without mistakes and I managed to do that."
#14 - Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) - Volkswagen Dallara F308
- Team Signature
Qualifying: 4th place - race 1: 7th place - race 2: 2nd place
"The race on Saturday was very unfortunate due to the collision with Alexander Sims because it caused me to drop from fourth to seventh place. I'm pleased with second place on Sunday although, obviously, I'd have liked to win. I lost one place but was able to recapture it just a short time later. Afterwards I tried everything to overtake Antonio but he didn't give me a chance."
