Stroll opts for second F3 season with Prema

Canadian racer Lance Stroll will continue in the European Formula 3 championship in 2016, staying on with Prema Powerteam for a title assault.

Stroll, son of billionaire Lawrence Stroll, was a race winner in an up-and-down rookie F3 campaign in 2015, suffering numerous high-profile incidents early on but capping off the year with victory at the Hockenheim season finale.

He secured five further podiums and finished fifth in the standings, ending the year as second best rookie behind Charles Leclerc.

Prior to that, Stroll clinched the 2014 Italian F4 title with Prema in his debut year in cars, and took the Toyota Racing Series crown in the off-season.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be racing with Prema Powerteam for a third consecutive year, the Canadian said.

"I’m certain that Prema will give me the equipment and support for me to launch an attack on the 2016 F3 Euro Series title, which is my goal for next season."

"I joined Prema in my first season of car racing last year and they guided me to the Italian F4 title. This year they’ve done an awesome job for me in my maiden F3 season.

"I honestly could not be any happier than continuing to work with Rene [Rosin, team boss] and his team again next year and I know we will be ultra-competitive."

With Prema taking over the Lazarus entry in GP2, Stroll was linked with a move to the category, but he will instead be staying put.

"It is an honour to have Lance with us again for the 2016 FIA F3 European Championship," said Rosin.

"He did a superb job in his maiden [F3] season, cruising to multiple podium finishes and a phenomenal overall win en-route to a stunning fifth place in the final 2015 standings."

"Making his debut in such a demanding series, he was the class of the rookie field and also fought with much more experienced rivals, proving he is ready for the next step.

"I am sure he has all what it takes to deliver more brilliant results and fight for the outright F3 crown next season."

Prema has swept every drivers' and teams' title in European F3 (and its predecessor, the F3 Euro Series) since 2011, helping the likes of Roberto Merhi and Esteban Ocon to the crown.
