Canadian Bruno Spengler takes 3rd place in A1 Ring, Austria
Montreal, Canada, September 6th, 2003 -- Canadian Formula 3 racer Bruno Spengler of St. Hyppolite, Quebec captured third place today in the first of two Euro F3 races held on the A1 Ring road circuit in Austria. For the 19-year old driver and member of the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Junior Team it was Spengler's second visit on the podium so far this season.
Behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz powered Dallara, Spengler clinched the third fastest time during this morning's qualifying session. His time of 1:27.405 was just three tenths of a second slower than that set by pole position holder, Australian Ryan Briscoe. "I used my two sets of tires and everything worked out well," said Spengler. "I could have set the second fastest time but I made a small driving mistake in the last corner which cost me 2/10ths of a second."
At the green, Spengler took a good start but immediately experienced some difficulties in trying to match the pace set by the leaders. "My tires took a very long time to reach their proper working temperature," Spengler explained. "I had some difficulties following the leaders (Briscoe and Alexandre Premat). I also made one or two small driving mistakes. But once my tires provided maximum grip, my car became very fast. I was faster than Premat but I never was in a position to pass him because I'd lost too much time in the early part of the race." Spengler crossed the line in third place, beating many fierce competitors such as Markus Winkelhock, Nico Rosberg and Christian Klien.
"I am very happy with my second podium finish of the season," said Spengler. "Team ASM mechanics and engineers worked very well this weekend and they provided me with a fast car. The balance is perfect. For tomorrow's race, I will have to start from 9th place on the grid but no one knows what may happen, especially in the early laps of the race. But the car is fast, there are passing opportunities around this track and I will drive as hard as I can, as usual."
