Qualifying for race 2 at the A1 Ring in Austria
Montreal, Canada, September 5th, 2003 -- Nineteen-year old race car driver Bruno Spengler of St. Hyppolite, Quebec will take the start of the second Euro Formula 3 race of the weekend in 9th place on Austria's A1 Ring road course. Each Euro Formula 3 event stages two races -- one held the Saturday and a second one on the Sunday. Spengler -- the reining champion of the North American Fran-Am series -- is a Mercedes-Benz works driver and a member of the French ASM F3 team.
The Formula 3 drivers enjoyed today one hour of practice in the morning and a qualifying session in the afternoon.
"During this morning's one-hour practice session, I immediately realised that my mechanics had inverted fourth and fifth gears in the transmission," said Spengler. "So, I drove straight into the pits after having completed just one lap so the team could do the repairs. That cost me 15 minutes of track time. Things went well afterward and I set the 8th fastest time without having put a new set of tires on the car."
The qualifying session was then held in the afternoon. "With my engineer, we decided to begin the session on new tires," said Spengler. "On this track, the tires take a long time to reach their proper working temperature. However, this was a mistake today. I was on new tires on a dirty track and then my tires were gone when the track was fast. It was not too bad because I set the 9th fastest time, which will give me the 9th place on the starting grid for Sunday's race."
Tomorrow, Bruno Spengler will qualify in the morning for the afternoon's race. "I will have two sets of new tires tomorrow. Things will be quite different. There are still a few minor issues to address, both in the car set-up and in my driving," said the 19-year old Canadian.
