Victories for Adrian Sutil and Lewis Hamilton
Adrian Sutil in the French ASM team's Dallara Mercedes won the fifth round of the Formula 3 Euro Series at Spa, Belgium and achieved his first victory in the championship. His team mate Lewis Hamilton had finished the race first; however, he was disqualified later like seven other drivers. The reason was that their cars' diffusers were not in conformity with the regulations. Hamilton won Sunday's sixth round ahead of Sutil. The drivers with the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine M271 developed from the production engine of the C- and E-Class have won five of the season's six races so far. After six of 20 races this year, Hamilton leads the championship with 48 points ahead of Sutil and Rossiter with 35 each.
Race 1: Sutil started third on the grid and passed Rossiter at the La Source hairpin to take second position behind leader Hamilton. In pouring rain, both ASM drivers extended their lead continuously and Sutil came home second after 12 laps, 11.291sec ahead of Rossiter. In the post-race scrutineering the diffusers' measurements of eight cars from five different teams were found to not comply with the regulations. The respective drivers with Hamilton among them were excluded from the race and Sutil was declared winner. Peter Mucke, team owner of Mucke Motorsport, explained: "The diffuser is an original Dallara part which has been checked before the race and did comply with the rules. However, due to its flexible construction and because drivers hit the kerbs it could have happened on this track, that the diffuser has been deformed and therefore was not in conformity with the regulations any more."
Race 2: Starting from pole position Sutil took the lead immediately ahead of Hamilton. Entering Eau Rouge the Englishman was side-by-side with his team mate and passed him in the corner. On the following laps, both ASM drivers opened a gap ahead of the rest of the field with both drivers posting fastest laps. The fastest lap of the race was set by Hamilton with a 2:13.844 on lap six. After 12 laps, Hamilton won 2.1sec ahead of Sutil. Lucas di Grassi in a Manor Motorsport Dallara Mercedes came home third. His team mate Paul di Resta was fourth in the beginning, but dropped to eighth on lap six following a problem with his left front tyre. He fought back to finish fifth.
Lewis Hamilton (ASM): "I thank my team for their great job in difficult conditions. The passing manoeuvre with Adrian today was fun, however it was tight and on the outer line there was not much room. In the following he pushed hard all the way and I had to do my best until the finish."
Adrian Sutil (ASM): "I'm happy about my race win on Saturday and I would have loved to repeat it today. However, Lewis overtook me with a great manoeuvre which was really courageous. He had a little bit more speed coming down the front straight; therefore he was able top pass."
Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: "A very good weekend for the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 Juniors with top performances by Lewis Hamilton and his team mate Adrian Sutil. When eight cars in total were disqualified after race one, it was particularly tough for Lewis. He lost a total of 12 points compared to his pursuer James Rossiter."
