ROUND 4 -- Norisring (D) June 20-22 2003
Robert Doornbos moves up in 5th position in Drivers Championship with a strong 4th place at Norisring circuit, in front of 150.000 people!! Under very hot conditions Robert Doornbos today achieved a fantastic 4th place in Sunday Race2 on the German Norisring circuit and moved from 7th up to 5th position in Drivers standings, with 18 points.
After a super 3rd qualifying position for Sunday's race, Robert was very close to qualify his Ghinzani's car#16 on the first front row for Race1, with a best 2nd fastest time he had until last few minutes of qualifying. Because several other drivers improved their lap times in yellow flags situation, Robert dropped in 11th position. With a strong starting the Dutch driver was able to overtake five cars at the first curve (a very tight hairpin) moving to 6th place. Unfortunately Lasee, from behind, touched him and he spun dropping to 26th position. With great determination Robert clocked the fastest time for four consecutive times and run the 20 laps remained clinching the first race in a best 12th position. "It's incredible to believe that 10 drivers have notched their quickest time with yellow flags and that I was forced to start front the sixth row. The set-up of my car today was really great! If I could have started from my original 2nd position, I'm sure I would have battled for victory".
In Race2, today Robert scored other 5 important points with his final 4th position. At the green light Doornbos had a very quick and incredible start passing at the lead at the first curve and regaining 3rd place after a strong battle with Prema driver Kubica and French Premat. Robert maintained his third position waiting for an appropriate moment to overtake when, in lap 4, a car touched him. Team Ghinzani driver regained the track in 9th position and pushing very hard, as he is able to, Robert climbed up to 5th and then to 4th position that he was able to manage and maintain until the chequered flag. Even if it would have been better to finish to podium, the 5 points scored today are very good for the Drivers Championship where Robert is actually 5th with 18 points. "I'm a little bit disappointed because if I had not been touched I would have finished at podium. Anyway my car was really good and we are on the right way. I think it is also very important to be as much constant in the performances as possible, so I'm really happy with my 5 championshipspoints".
