Positive weekend at Hockenheim for Tom Blomqvist

The Jagonya Ayam with Carlin driver was quickest on the track during the second qualifying session on Saturday and as a result claimed two pole positions for the final two races on Sunday.

However, due to an engine change beforehand, Blomqvist received a 10-place grid penalty for the next three races (two at Hockenheim and race one in Pau).

For the first race, Blomqvist qualified sixth but at the start had to run wide to avoid an accident ahead, which dropped him back a few places. At the restart, Blomqvist was able to use his pace to pass Felix Rosenqvist for fifth and on the final lap made up one further position to finish fourth and pick up valuable championship points.

Commenting on the first race, Blomqvist said, ‘We were a little fortunate on the final lap to move up to fourth position but it’s very good to come away with more points. It was a tough first lap, there was a collision at the hairpin and I had to run completely off track to avoid it, which meant I lost quite a few places, however the pace was there and we were able to prove it once I had passed Felix [Rosenqvist] for fifth.”

Starting 11th for the second race on Sunday, Blomqvist was particularly impressive. His strong pace was clearly shown from qualifying and he started to quickly move his way through the field. Unfortunately the safety car came out in the final stages, which hampered any chances of gaining some more places however Blomqvist was very happy to finish in fifth.

The final race at Hockenheim, saw Blomqvist again start 11th after the penalty. However, it was short lived, when he was involved in a collision with two other cars, which brought the safety car out and ended his day after the first lap.

After these three races, Blomqvist earned 22 points and now sits tied for second in the championship standings with 67 points.
