Volkwagen dominates season opener in Formula 3 Euro Series

Wolfsburg (11 April 2010). With a victory and three podiums the Formula 3 Euro Series season opener was extremely successful for Volkswagen. Edoardo Mortara (I) proved to be the biggest winner at Le Castellet. In his comeback to the series, Mortara triumphed in the first race, finished the second one as the runner-up and now heads the standings. His German Signature team-mate, Marco Wittmann, celebrated second and third places.

As early as in qualifying the drivers "powered by Volkswagen" showed that the 5,791-kilometre circuit Paul Ricard HTTT suited them well: grid position two for the Belgian Laurens Vanthoor (Signature), P3 for Marco Wittmann. But it was Edoardo Mortara who made his mark on the race. The Italian who had won the Formula 3 Grand Prix at Macau, which is regarded as the unofficial F3 world championship, with Volkswagen Power last year clinched a start-finish victory from P5. With barely a one-second gap, Wittmann took second place.

In the second race Mortara and Wittmann pushed forwards to second and third after having started from positions eight and seven. The man of the race was Laurens Vanthoor who managed a fifth-place finish after having starting from the last position on the grid. Two drivers -- Adrian Quaife-Hobbs (GB) and Antonio Felix da Costa (P) -- of the second Volkswagen team, Motopark Academy, scored points in France as well.

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:
"The Formula 3 season couldn't have started any better for us. Three victories last week in the British Championship and now four podium places including a win in the Formula 3 Euro Series and, not to forget, the top four positions at yesterday's ATS Formula 3 Cup opener at Oschersleben."

Qualifying: 5th place - race 1: 1st place - race 2: 2nd place

"A fantastic opening weekend for me: I wasn't happy with qualifying, but with a good start in the first race I laid the groundwork for my win. The second race was similarly exciting - particularly the final lap when I overtook Roberto Merhi and Marco Wittmann and thus managed to finish as the runner-up."

#6 - Marco Wittmann (Germany) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: 3rd place - race 1: 2nd place - race 2: 3rd place

"Of course I'm very happy with my first two podium places in Formula 3. Still, I'm a little upset about having lost my second place in the second race to Edoardo just before seeing the chequered flag."
