Best result of the season for Laurens Vanthoor

NURBURGRING. This weekend at the Nurburgring the fifth out of nine rounds of the F3 Euro series meetings was on the calendar. Signature VW driver Laurens Vanthoor had made a point of putting up a strong performance in the second part of the season and this came about on the German Eifel region circuit. On Sunday all Vanthoor's hopes were dashed due to a problem with the starter motor.

"The 7th place in the rankings which I was holding jut before this weekend in the championship was not the place I had in mind at the beginning of the season", the Limburg based representative of the RACB National Team told us after the race weekend. "The one month break following the previous race at Norisring gave me the opportunity to gather up my thoughts. My season was meant to take off once again here on the Nurburgring, all the more so seeing I thoroughly enjoy this circuit. This is where I clinched my title in the German F3 championship last year and with my second place here on Saturday also my best result this season."

Qualifying

In the qualifying sessions for the 5th round of F3 Euro Series Laurens Vanthoor finished in an excellent third place. Vanthoor was twice fastest during the morning free practice sessions and later on in the afternoon came within a tenth of clinching his first pole position of the year. Later during the course of the evening news came through that the driver ahead of Vanthoor had been disqualified, and as such Vanthoor moved on up to the front row of the grid, next to his Italian team mate Mortara.

Laurens Vanthoor (Signature VW): "I'm truly delighted with the result, both this morning's during the free practice sessions, as also with the evening's qualifying. It's not only the fact that we are there, but on top of that it's a great boost for the confidence, my confidence, that of the team's as also everyone else involved here."

Race 1

In the weekend's first race Laurens Vanthoor finished in an excellent second place behind his Signature team mate, Edoardo Mortara. Vanthoor had a perfect start, had to let Mortara through in the first right hander and after that defended his second place behind his team mate, and ahead of Alexander Sims, the first of the Mercedes drivers.

Laurens Vanthoor (Signature VW): "Edoardo is my team mate and he's battling it out for the title so I didn't want to take any unnecessary risks at the start. I was on the inside, where the track is bumpier, and due to that I needed to brake earlier than Mortara. Also during the race it was pretty difficult to attack him without taking risks. I'm really pleased that after such a difficult start to the season I was finally able to prove my worth. It's a great result. However tomorrow it will be a different assignment starting from the seventh place on the grid (seeing it will be an inverted top-8)."

Race 2

Low mist over the Nurburgring kept the F3 drivers waiting impatiently and the start was only given at 15.40hrs - instead of 11.25hrs. Vanthoor was ready to carry out a climb-up through the pack race from his seventh grid position but a problem with the starter motor dashed all his hopes. Vanthoor lost two laps in the pitlane and he finally took the chequered flag in 11th place.

The following meeting will be held on 21st and 22nd August at the Circuitpark Zandvoort.
