F3 LEADER MORTARA TAKES SINGLE POINT IN RACE 2
NURBURG (GER) 8 AUGUST 2010: Edoardo Mortara rose two places to finish sixth in today's Formula 3 Euro Series race at the Nurburgring, having won Race 1 yesterday.
With team mate Laurens Vanthoor stalling on the grid ahead of the warm up lap, and Valtteri Bottas stalling at the race start, Edo was elevated to a points scoring position. A start-line crash involving Matias Laine, Mika Maki and Christopher Zanella brought the safety car out for three laps and, with the race having already been delayed four hours due to low cloud, which prevented the medical helicopter from taking off, the decision was made to time-limit the race to 20 laps.
Mortara held his sixth place all the way to the line, despite coming under pressure from Bottas in the second half of the race. By finishing second, Marco Whittmann has cut Edo's championship lead by four points to 18.
Race position: 6 / Grid position: 8 / Dry, 18.1o. ambient and 22o. track temperature / Drivers' championship standing: =1st, 66 points
EDOARDO MORTARA: "This was a really boring race for me. My start was not that good; the launch was okay but, just as in the last few races, I started getting wheel spin after a few meters. I'm struggling with the clutch and it's difficult to understand why.
"I was following Roberto Merhi and I couldn't get close enough without losing grip. It wasn't worth making a silly move, so I decided to settle for this sixth. Bottas, behind me, was suffering from exactly the same issue.
"Anyway, I come away with a point which is better than nothing. Overall it's been a quite good weekend, having achieved pole position and the win yesterday."
