Two Victories for Lewis Hamilton
Dallara Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won both races of the sixth event of the 2005 Formula 3 Euro Series at Nuremberg's Norisring. On Saturday, Hamilton won ahead of fellow Dallara Mercedes drivers Sebastian Vettel (Mucke Motorsport) and Paul di Resta (Manor Motorsport). On Sunday, Hamilton won ahead of his ASM team mate Adrian Sutil. The drivers with the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine M271 developed from the production engine of the C- and E-Class have won 11 of 12 races of the season so far and achieved all twelve pole positions. Hamilton, who achieved nine of these 11 victories, leads the championship with 108 points ahead of Sutil with 65 points and James Rossiter (Dallara-Opel) with 47.
Race 1: Starting from pole position, Hamilton accelerated into an immediate lead. Vettel, third in qualifying, attacked second-placed Sutil under braking into the Grundig hairpin and hit the German's car from behind. Vettel went by but Sutil fought back and was second again after two corners. However, as a consequence of the collision, a battery cable on Sutil's car was damaged. From lap 19, he suffered from misfire and retired on lap 21. After 34 laps Hamilton took the chequered flag as winner, followed by Vettel and Paul di Resta in the Manor Motorsport Dallara Mercedes. Di Resta's team mate Lucas di Grassi ended up fifth. Atila Abreu in the other Mucke Motorsport Dallara Mercedes was sixth when he spun on lap 31 and eventually came home ninth.
Race 2: Hamilton started from his ninth pole position in 12 races. He took the lead ahead of his team mate Sutil. Vettel dropped from third on the grid to seventh at the end of the opening lap. After exciting battles with Manor drivers di Resta and di Grassi, he improved to fifth on lap seven. On the 13th lap, Vettel passed Loic Duval (Dallara-Opel) at the Dutzendteich hairpin and took fourth place. After 35 laps, Hamilton won ahead of Sutil. Vettel ended up fourth whilst di Grassi and di Resta finished sixth and eighth respectively. Atila Abreu (Mucke Motorsport) won an exciting fight with Guillaume Moreau to end up tenth.
Lewis Hamilton (ASM): "A great weekend in front of a fantastic crowd. Our team did a great job and the Mercedes-Benz engine ran perfectly again. I took maximum points out of both races and made another step forward towards the championship."
Sebastian Vettel (Mucke): "I'm really happy about my first Formula 3 podium finish. I'm sorry about the incident with Adrian yesterday; I just got it wrong and hit him."
Adrian Sutil (ASM): "Without retiring yesterday it would have been a great weekend for me, too. However, with today's fastest lap I showed that I have the potential to win races."
