Erik Janis leads rookies after top 10
Erik Janis got, like in his debut at Hockenheim, a top 10 position in the first F3 Euro Series race at Mugello. He finished 10th today after 9th and 10th position in the opening round. He was also third in the rookies and kept his lead in this category. He started 14th and during 21 laps managed to directly overtake three rivals.
The Mucke Motorsport team decided, given Janis's grid position, to put on a new set of tyres for the race. There was only one aim - to get in the top 8 and score not only points but also get a good grid position for tomorrow's race. The Czech driver just missed the position. He was driven out of the road in the hard fight for the eight place.
The driver of the junior Mercedesu Benz team was able to continue and got back to the track and tried to fight again but he was hampered by understeering. Anyway, his team boss praised his effort also thanks to the fact that his pace in the race was comparable with rivals on the 3rd, 4th and 5th places.
Erik Janis: "I was very close to the eight place which means one point and also the pole position for tomorrow's race. Unfortunately, I was not able to take it even with a help of new tyres that we had decided to use in the race. On the other hand, it is only my third race in the championship and I am in the top 10 for the third time. I am not totally disappointed although I wanted some points and better position for tomorrow. I am happy with the speed which I showed in the raced and I am also pleased that I was moving up in the order thanks to the pace and not retirements of the others. I overtook three drivers in a direct fight. I attacked the rival on the 8th place but he pushed me off the road. I managed to close the gap again but the car understeered a little and I spun under braking and had to run through a gravel trap. Unfortunately, I was not able to do more than hold the 10th position."
Peter Mucke: "Erik put in his best performance so far in our team. It is pity that he missed the top 8 but it happens in those fights. Erik had also a very good pace, his lap times were similar to the drivers on the 3rd and 4th places."
Antonin Charouz: "Someone can consider 10th as nothing special but it is not like this in this case. I got phone calls from people at Mugello who knows the business and thier praised Erik's effort. Especially the way he moved up in the order. It is not very easy in this category and on this track. I am happy with his performance. We must improve qualifying performance for next races. The grid position is very important in the F3."
