Podium Places for Olivier Pla and Jamie Green
Dallara Mercedes driver Olivier Pla of Team ASM finished second in Sunday's fifth round of the Formula 3 Euro Series at Pau, France. In Monday's race, his team mate Jamie Green came home third.
Championship leader Ryan Briscoe (Dallara-Opel) was the winner on Sunday whilst Fabio Carbone (Dallara-Renault) scored victory on Monday. Pla is second overall with 24 points behind Briscoe with 54.
Race 1: On a drying track, ASM drivers Pla and Alexandre Premat started third and fourth. Pla improved to second on the first lap and passed leader Briscoe on lap 4. Two laps later Premat was second and the ASM drivers held the 1-2 lead until lap 17 when Premat was hit by Briscoe and ended in the barrier. On lap 19. Briscoe passed Pla to take the lead because the Frenchman's tyres were adjusted for rain and didn't have enough pressure on the drying track. Both finished the race in the same order. Team Kolles drivers Jan Heylen and Charles Zwolsman came home tenth and 17th respectively. Team Mucke's Markus Winkelhock improved from seventh on the grid to third on lap 17, but retired after an accident. His team mate Christian Klien was disqualified because track marshals had push started his car. Green retired due to gearbox failure.
Race 2: The race was stopped after a start collision involving Heylen. After the second start, Premat improved from fifth on the grid to third behind Briscoe and Nicolas Lapierre (Dallara-Renault). After the Frenchman retired, Premat was second and attacked the leader setting the fastest lap of the race (1:12.999min) on lap 5. On lap 6, both drivers came together, but were able to rejoin the race in third (Premat) and fourth places respectively. Eight laps later Premat's race ended with a steering rod failure. Markus Winkelhock who was seventh retired on the same lap due to an accident. Behind winner Carbone and Briscoe, Jamie Green finished third. The British driver had replaced injured Canadian Bruno Spengler for this event. Zwolsman finished sixth ahead of Team Mucke's Christian Klien.
Olivier Pla (ASM): "An eventful race which could have ended even better for me. However, yesterday I was slowed due to the wrong tyre pressure. Today, I had to pit to have my front wing exchanged."
Markus Winkelhock (Mucke): "My two retirements are bitter. On Sunday, I was already third and today a fourth-place finish was realistic. But this is Pau - the track is very slippery, if you're 20 centimetres off the line you end up in the barrier. "
Alexandre Premat (ASM): "It's disappointing when you are forced to retire twice, always after a coming together with Ryan Briscoe. Today, I was already beside him but he pulled over. I rejoined the race, but I retired due to a broken part in the steering rod."
