Jordan King – a titled rookie!
Jordan King has really hit the headlines in his first season in Formula 3. A few days ago he clinched the British F3 title and the Carlin driver is gradually fighting his way to the front in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.
In motor sport experience often makes the difference and it’s all the truer when young drivers are learning the ropes. When two drivers dominate a championship as Raffaele Marciello and Felix Rosenqvist are doing in this year’s FIA Formula 3 European Championship, it isn’t easy to get noticed.
Despite this, a rookie is making a name for himself in 2013. Jordan King filled the runner-up spot in the 2012 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC and he is one of the few real newcomers to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship this season. The British driver continues to improve his competitiveness and at the Red Bull Ring he drove this home by scoring a top-3 finish. There are nine races still to go to the end of the European championship and King, who is lying eighth, has already achieved an exploit this season by winning the British Formula 3 title.
“I’m proud of what we’ve all achieved as a team, and obviously to win the British title in my first year at F3 level – defeating a far more experienced competitor – makes it even more special,” explains Jordan King. “It was a little bit surreal when I thought about all the drivers who have won this championship before – and now I’ve joined that illustrious list.”
“It’s always important for a driver to win titles, all the more so when it’s their first season in the formula,” analyses Trevor Carlin, the Carlin team boss. “Jordan put on some great drives in the British F3 championship and also in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He’s made a few small mistakes but he’s learned in each situation and he’s never made the same mistake twice. Given the quality of the field in the European Championship, above all he has to learn to get it right in qualifying as each session is extremely closely fought.”
The ‘king’ of the 2013 British F3 Championship is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, though, and he’s tackling the final stretch of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with a weight lifted from his shoulders after his title. By finishing second in free practice on the Zandvoort circuit and qualifying third once and fourth twice he’s proved that he’s a driver to be reckoned with. And when one realizes that it took guys like Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean two seasons to fight at the front in Formula 3, Jordan King looks like he has a rosy future ahead of him in 2014!
