The Rain in Spain Causes Havoc
Barcelona Spain, should, by all accounts be a sunny location. Unfortunately the weather played havoc with the teams in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
Starting on Thursday Team Mucke and Jonathan Summerton had a great day with Jonathan 2nd fastest in the practice. Come Friday the rain was coming down a little at the start of practice. Again Jonathan was extremely fast but as the track dried he lost the fastest time to other cars who changed set up.
In Friday afternoon qualifying most teams were finding the set up with times of just over 1 minute. The top 15 cars were at times within half a second with thousands of a second separating positions. At the end of the session Jonathan was 12th, a few tenths off 3rd place.
On Saturday morning it was raining but the sky was clearing and the track drying as the cars went to pit lane. That changed at the 7 minutes before the race start. The rain started. Team Mucke could only part change the set up due to time restraints. As the race started cars slid everywhere Jonathan spinning and sliding off on turn 3. His race over. Later the race was stopped due to several inches of rain that had fallen and obvious safety reasons.
Race 2 put Jonathan at the back of the grid after race 1 finish. However, starting from the back allowed him to use the race for practicing his start. He did one of the best starts to date on the damp track going from the back to P9 by the first corner. Safely going into turn one on the outside and preparing for turn two he was hit by a car that had just flown over another car causing him to go airborne and land on the rear of Jonathan's car thus ending what could have been a great performance. Later a couple of drivers were penalized for causing crashes on turn one. Only 12 cars finished
Now Jonathan goes to Zandvoort and Brunn to test for the A1GP rookie program and then to the next round of F3 Euro Series at the Le Mans track.
