Having dominated the wet qualifying on Friday, Gunther started the race from pole and led every lap of the race.

Fellow front-row starter Jake Hughes, meanwhile, was under pressure by Jehan Daruvala and Callum Ilott at Turn 1, but eventually emerged in second.

Full-course yellow neutralised the action before the end of the opening lap after Ralf Aron ran into the back of Pedro Piquet at the Turn 6 chicane, and ended up in the gravel.

Gunther had a lead of 1.6s when it was back to green, and he controlled the rest of the race to win by nearly six seconds.

Hughes couldn't shake off Daruvala but the Briton still took his best finish of the season and his first podium since the Silverstone season opener.

Daruvala completed the podium with Joey Mawson taking fourth not far behind.

The Australian rookie was second in qualifying, but was forced to start the race fifth after a three-place grid penalty for an incident at Pau.

Still, a brave move on the outside of Turn 1 on Ilott saw him finish fourth, as the Briton settled for fifth.

Van Amersfoort Racing's Harrison Newey and Prema's Guan Yu Zhou took sixth and seventh respectively.

Lando Norris lost two places at the start but managed to pass Mick Schumacher, the duo bumping wheels at the first corner, to take eighth.

The Briton then also managed to close the gap on Zhou but couldn't make a move.

Schumacher was ninth, holding off Joel Eriksson, who recovered from 17th on the grid.

He passed his Motopark teammate David Beckmann late in the race for the final pointscoring position, as the latter completed his first race with his new team in 11th.

The BMW junior then put Schumacher under serious pressure, but the Prema driver did not crack and secured ninth.

With his main rivals Norris and Eriksson only finishing eighth and 10th, Gunther took the championship lead by 19 points.
