Two podium places for Edoardo Mortara and Volkswagen

Wolfsburg (14 April 2008). Successful start for Volkswagen in the Formula 3 Euro Series: the Italian Edoardo Mortara (Team Signature Plus) in his Volkswagen-Dallara clinched two third places at the Hockenheim season opener, now sharing the top of the standings with an equal points score with the Finn Mika Maki (Mercedes-Dallara). Franck Mailleux from France (Signature Plus) finished both races in fourth place, now ranking third overall together with the American Charlie Kimball (Mercedes-Dallara). On positions five and six, respectively, the Frenchman Jean Karl Vernay (Signature Plus) and the German Maximilian Gotz (RC Motorsport) scored points on Saturday as well, thus contributing to the very good result. After its Formula 3 comeback last year, Volkswagen has now embarked on its first full season in the Europe-wide series.

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director
"With two podium places, the season opener in the Formula 3 Euro Series started more than satisfactorily for Volkswagen. In addition, the fast lap times underline the fact that the evolution of the two-litre engine from the Volkswagen Group is absolutely competitive. My compliments to everyone who had a part in this and an extra 'well done' to Edoardo Mortara for two strong races."

#7 - Edoardo Mortara (I), Volkswagen Dallara F308, Team Signature plus
Qualifying: place 4 - race 1: place 3 - race 2: place 3

"The result makes me feel very optimistic - ranking at the top of the table after the first weekend was something I hadn't expected. I'm sure that we'll have many successful races coming up with Volkswagen. My weekend was very good; we found the right setup as early as for the qualifying practice. In the first race I tried to stay out of the worst fights, and this paid off. On Saturday I lost a few positions at the beginning but later was able to overtake several competitors."

#8 - Franck Mailleux (F) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature plus
Qualifying: place 12 - race 1: place 4 - race 2: place 4

"I'm very satisfied with my first race weekend with Signature and Volkswagen. On Saturday, I managed a small sensation. Having started from 16th on the grid, I improved to fourth place. Race two went well also, but when I realised that I couldn't overtake Christian Vietoris, I made room for Edoardo so that he could try it. For the remainder of the season, I've got a really good feeling."

#17 - Maxi Gotz (D) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team RC Motorsport
Qualifying: place 14 - race 1: place 6 - race 2: place 8

"Compared with the season finale last year Volkswagen made a big step forwards with the evolution of the engine. I'm pretty satisfied with the season opener, although the weekend wasn't perfect for our team. In qualifying we decided to use slicks for a very long time, and this proved to be the wrong choice. In the first race I gained ground in a major way, I was able to overtake several rivals in slipstream situations. In the second race on Sunday several drivers used flatter wing settings, and I had a hard time keeping them behind me."
