Three more points for da Costa in Hockenheim
Antonio Felix da Costa leaves Germany with 3 more points to his tally in the F3 Euro Series championship after a strong second round held at the 4.574 km Hockenheim circuit over the past weekend.
After a difficult qualifying that left him tenth on the grid, a position that did not do justice to the Motopark Academy driver, as he encountered several problems in practice, he made up three places during the course of Saturday's race one to secure a place on the front row of the grid for Sunday's race.
"We could only run half of the time in practice because of mechanical problems, and never with new tyres. Therefore, I had some difficulties getting to grip with the car and the new tyres in qualifying. I had a good start on Saturday but I lost several positions in the second turn when I was attacked by another driver. In order to avoid a crash, I had to go wide and then I was stuck behind Carlos Munoz who is not an easy driver to overtake. I lost contact with the leaders but I eventually climbed to 7th position which allowed me to start on the front row of the second race."
The second race was promising for the 18-year old driver, who took the lead right at the start. Alas, a drive through penalty for having run too wide at turn 1 sent him back to 9th position which he kept until the chequered flag.
"I had a good start, Merhi got past me but I was able to stay close to him and I was in a good position to fight for the win," Antonio said. "Unfortunately, I ran wide and got penalized. The first time it was by a little margin but I knew I should not take the risk again. After 12 laps, I was putting Merhi under pressure and I entered the first turn at full speed... I ran wide again, that was the end of my race really. I made a mistake but we improved a lot, our pace was competitive and I am optimistic for the rest of the season."
The next round of the F3 EuroSeries will take place in Valencia, Spain, on May 21-23.
