German racer Maximilian Gunther will continue in European Formula 3 for a second season in 2016, linking up with reigning champion Prema Powerteam.
Gunther, 18, was twice runner-up in ADAC Formula 4's predecessor Formel Masters before joining F3 with his long-time squad Mucke in 2015.
He helped Mucke to its only win of the season at the Norisring, ducking down the inside of three cars in one corner for the lead, but would part ways with the German team before the penultimate round of the season.
Instead, he lined up with Prema for the Hockenheim finale and finished all three races in the top six.
"Gunther already entered the final round of the season at Hockenheim with Prema which gave us the opportunity evaluate his potential first hand," said team boss Rene Rosin.
"He impressed us all as a really quick and consistent driver and those are the two major elements needed to be a successful part of Prema. So we did not miss the chance to sign him and I am proud to have him for the 2016 season."
Gunther will partner Lance Stroll and Ralf Aron in Prema's line-up, with the fourth seat still appearing up for grabs.
"I'm very happy and proud to be part of the Prema family," said Gunther. "The first race weekend with the team in Hockenheim as well as the testing days afterwards have been very impressive for me.
"The atmosphere inside the team is fantastic and their way of working is very professional. I'm very much looking forward to a successful cooperation in the future. I already can’t wait to drive the first race next season."
