Kimball and Signature to take on the Formula 3 Euroseries
Charlie Kimball, the 2005 British Formula 3 International Vice-Champion, has set his sights on winning the Formula 3 Euroseries Championship in 2006. The young American will join forces with French powerhouse Signature to take the fight to the best young racing drivers in the world. Kimball plans to build on his very successful rookie year in Formula 3 where he had 5 race wins, 6 pole positions, 2 track records, and a total of 13 podiums. Signature, the only non-Mercedes-Benz powered car to win a race in the 2005 Euroseries, is looking to make the most of its switch to the ever powerful German power plant.
Kimball commented on his new team, "I visited the Signature factory before Macau and was very impressed by their whole operation. They have the determination and the capabilities to win. I am convinced that now with Mercedes power, together we can take the fight for wins and the championship to ASM, the team that has been dominant for the last two seasons."
Team principal Philippe Sinault said of the new partnership, "It takes a complete season to really know a driver so I don't know Charlie very well yet. However, beyond his natural good mood, I know that he is very quick, focused, competitive and extremely determined. Together, we have all the ingredients to produce a fantastic season."
Following his second place finish in the 2005 British Formula 3 International Championship, Kimball had some difficult decisions to make. He discussed his move to race in the Euro Series: "Staying with Carlin to win the British Championship in 2006 would have been the easy choice. But after finishing second in my first year, I wanted a new challenge. The opportunity to take on the best Formula 3 drivers in Europe, learn new tracks, and different tires is the right move for me at this point in my career. Formula 3 is a tremendous learning and development series for young drivers and I really want the experience of a second year before moving up to GP2."
Kimball has spent the winter in California training in preparation for the start of the 2006 season. The weather in California has been exceptionally good so he has been able to spend a lot of time outside training in the warm sunshine. "This winter, I have taken a big step up in both mental and physical fitness. I have never better prepared for the challenges of the racing season. I am hungrier than ever to win," enthused Kimball.
Kimball will begin testing in March in preparation for the coming season. The Formula 3 Euroseries begins on the weekend of April 8-9 at Hockenheim in Germany.
