Winning Return to F3 Euro Series
Renger van der Zande made a dream return to the F3 EuroSeries claiming a lights to flag victory in Barcelona. The result gives Motopark Academy their first win in the series.
It was a weekend of team building and getting the car up to race pace for the Dutch driver - and it all paid off with the car and lap times improving every session. After starting Race 1 from 15th, van der Zande battled his way up to 8th, a strategic victory, which gave the 23 year old pole position for the Sunday feature race.
Renger immediately built up a commanding lead from the hard chasing pack and after 10 laps was already almost 2.5 seconds ahead. Ten laps before the end Alexander Sims passed a tiring Basil Shaaban but by then it was too late, with the Dutch driver 5.5 seconds in front as the others were left to fight it out for second place.
"I am so happy, it is the perfect way to come back into the Series and show everyone what I can do. The difference in the car from when I sat in it on Friday to the car we had in the race is amazing and it has been a lot of hard work by myself, my engineer and the team to get right and it was really worth it." said Renger.
"Towards the end of the race I had some problems with my brakes and it was getting very difficult so it was great to see the chequered flag. I am really looking forward to the next round as I really think if the progress we all made together keeps going this way then things can only get even better!"
This season van der Zande has contested the British F3 championship and despite not competing in all rounds, he still looks set to finish 2nd overall, depending on results at the finale at Brands Hatch today. He is no stranger to Euro F3 now having won 4 races and scoring many podiums.
