Brilliant 2nd place for Spengler in F3
Montreal, Canada, September 20th, 2003 -- Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler -- who competes in his maiden season of Formula 3 racing -- today scored his best result of the year by finishing second in the first of two F3 Euro Series races held in Zandvoort, Holland.
Spengler, who drives a Dallara car powered by a Mercedes-Benz engine set the 4th fastest time in the sole qualifying session held this morning with a time of 1:33.056 at the average speed of 166.351 km/h. "It turned out to be a tough qualifying session because the session was red flagged three times," said the 19-year old driver. "In these circumstances, it was quite difficult to properly warm up the tires and find a clean lap without too much traffic. I set my best time on my third lap, and moments later the session was red flagged."
At the start of the 16-lap feature, the Dallara of Spengler rocketed off the line brilliantly. "I took another fantastic start and I started to pass the car which started in front of me and driven by my team mate Alexandre Premat," said the works Mercedes-Benz driver. "However, he started to squeeze me against the wall. Our wheels touched slightly but I never lifted the throttle. I finally managed to pass him before the first corner." The audacious manoeuvre allowed Spengler to vault from fourth to second place.
Then, Spengler drove the entire race in second position despite the fact that the Safety Car took the track twice. "Race leader Christian Klien was just slightly quicker than me," Spengler explained. "He was just one or two tenths quicker and I wasn't able to pass him. And at every restart, he was braking slightly before stepping on the gas. But that's the way to do it... I was faster than all the guys who were running behind me so I was not worried at all."
By crossing the line in second place, Bruno Spengler scored his best finish in his first season in the hotly contested Euro Formule 3 Series. "It was a good race and I am happy with second position. But tomorrow I will start from 6th place and I will need to produce another great start to finish the race on the podium. There are very few passing opportunities on this circuit."
The second race of the weekend will be held tomorrow morning, just before noon, Dutch time.
