Round 8 of the Euro Formula 3 Series -- Grand Prix of Pau (France)

Montreal, Canada, May 31, 2004 -- "I was simply a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong moment," said Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler after he was forced into a retirement in the second race of the Euro Formula 3 Series held at the Grand Prix of Pau, France.

Spengler who finished 6th in yesterday's race, was confident to perform well today. The 20-year old driver set the 7th fastest time of his group in qualifying, which put him 13th on the starting grid.

"I took a good start and quickly powered ahead of two or three competitors on the long straightaway," Spengler said after the race. "The first corner is quite fast but narrow. When I started braking, someone hit my right rear wheel. The car went sideways and I hit the guardrail. That was it."

Spengler was bitterly disappointed because the event turned out to be a race of attrition. "It was nobody's fault. It was a racing accident. When you start the race in the middle of the pack, these things are likely to happen, especially on such a tight, street circuit. I am disappointed because 11 drivers retired today, so it was easy to score championship points. We will be back racing in three weeks in Norisring. That is a fast, wide track where it is easy to pass. Things should go better than today!"

The next two rounds of the Euro Formula 3 Series will be held June 26 and 27 in Norisring, Germany.
