Montreal, Canada, August 17, 2003 -- Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler today finished a brilliant fourth in the second of two Euro Formula 3 races held at the Nurburgring, Germany. Spengler -- the reigning North American Fran-Am Champion -- crossed the line just 3.6 seconds down to the winner, Christian Klien of Austria.
Spengler -- the driver of the #34 Dallara Mercedes-Benz car - set the 5th fastest time during the sole qualifying session held Friday afternoon. The standing starts in the Euro F3 series are extremely exciting and the most aggressive drivers fight hard to gain positions before the first corner. "I took a good start and I braked very hard for the first, tight corner," Spengler related. "However, I braked too hard and locked up my right front wheel for about 300 feet which caused a huge flat spot. Then, I couldn't brake as hard as usual because of the vibrations."
Spengler was in the lead pack and was running in 5th place. A few laps later, his car began to run faster. "It became much better and I quickly caught the guy who was running in front of me."
But a sudden downpour flooded the circuit. The cars -- all shod on slick tires -- became impossible to drive on the wet tarmac. "Everyone spun, including myself but I quickly made it back on the track in 4th place," Spengler said. "The race officials took a long time to send the Safety Car on the track. It was extremely slippery out there." The race was finally stopped with just two laps to go and Bruno Spengler crossed the line in fourth place.
"I am very happy with fourth position," said Spengler, a member of the Mercedes Benz Junior Team. "It is very satisfying but I have to do better and to keep improving." Spengler will contest his next two Euro F3 races on the A1 Ring race circuit in Austria, September 5, 6 and 7.
