Spengler sliced through the Field

Hockenheim, Germany, April 17, 2004 -- Bruno Spengler, the only Canadian driver to compete in the Formula 3 Euro Series, drove a strong race today from 12th on the grid to 7th at the flag in the opening round of the series held on the Grand Prix road circuit of Hockenheim, Germany.

Qualifications

The qualifiying session was hotly disputed with the top 13 drivers grouped inside one second. Frenchman Alexandre Premat captured pole position with a time of 1:33.880 while Bruno Spengler had to be content with a time of 1:34.830 that gave him 12th place on the grid. Poland's Robert Kubica, Spengler's team mate, qualified 8th with a time of 1:34.686. "The car runs faster on new tires which is an improvement over yesterday," said Spengler. "However, we are still too slow."

Race

Driving a Mercedes-powered Dallara prepared by Mucke Motorsport, Spengler drove a strong opening lap to gain several places. "I made an average start but despite the cold tires, I passed four cars during the first lap of the race," Spengler explained.

On lap 4, Spengler was running in 8th place. He then demoted Daniel de la Rosa from 7th with a brillant move. "He was slower than me and that cost me some time. If I'd passed him sooner, I would have stayed in touch with the leaders."

Spengler drove extremely hard during the closing laps of the 18-lap race. On lap 10, he was 4.4 seconds behind his team mate Kubica. At the finish, he was right behind him. "The car was running much better then this morning and it was very quick in the last two corners of the circuit. I am very happy of having climbed through the field the way I did. I passed all cars except one whose driver spun early in the race."
