Spengler qualifies 7th for second F3 race
Hockenheim, Germany, October 3rd, 2003 -- Despite having been held up by a slower competitor during his fastest lap, Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler set today the 7th fastest time in qualifying for Race 2 of the Formula 3 Euro Series event held this weekend in Hockenheim, Germany.
Injured before the start of the season, Spengler has never driven the Hockenheim road course before today. The 19-year old driver only enjoyed 90 minutes to get to grips with the Grand Prix circuit. In comparison, the other competitors enjoyed two full days of testing and the three days of the first race staged here in April.
During the free pratice session of this morning, Spengler set the 15th fastest time on old tires. During qualifying, he was 3rd fastest on his first set of new tires. Then, he clinched the 7th fastest time on his second set. "On my first set of new tires, I had a very good feel for the grip and I was amongst a group of fast drivers," said Spengler, a member of the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Junior Team in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
"On my second set of tires, I had some problems finding a clear spot in the traffic," he said. "The tires were starting to let go but I set my best times in the first two sectors of the track. However, a backmarker suddenly slowed down just in front of me at the entrance of the Stadium, forcing me to brake. And that ruined my fast lap... The times are extremely close and every thousand of a second is crucial. But I'm confident because the car is fast and very well balanced. It should be a very good race tomorrow."
Race 1 will be held tomorrow afternoon -- with qualifying in the morning - and the second one is scheduled for Sunday morning.
