5th Place For Bruno Spengler

Montreal, Canada, September 19, 2004 -- Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler claimed 5th place today in the Euro Formula 3 Series' race held in Brno, Czeck Republic.

The Mercedes-Benz works driver captured 3rd place in the qualifying session held Friday afternoon.

At the start, Spengler was the victim of a manoeuvre of intimidation from the two team ASM drivers who started ahead of him. "I took a fantastic start and began slip between the two ASM cars," Spengler related. There was enough room for me to pass. However, the two slowly squeezed me and our wheels touched, sending my car in the air. Luckily, I kept going but lost two places. The car did not handle well in the corners afterwards because the left front suspension was bent."

The 21-year old Spengler is disappointed to have missed a good result. "If the two other drivers were keeping a straight line, I was passing them easily, that's for sure. I was much faster than they were. They must have anticipated my move and knew that they needed to block me. I am obviously disappointed but my race could have ended there or my car could have flipped over. In these circumstances, I am satisfied with 5th place."

The final two rounds of the 2004 season will be held October 2 and 3 in front of 100,000 spectators during the grand finale of the DTM series in Hockenheim, Germany.
