Spengler Sets The Fastest Lap of The Race
Montreal, Canada, May 16, 2004 -- Despite colliding with Nico Rosberg early in the race, Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler raced as hard as he could today and set the fastest lap of the race in Round 6 of the Formula 3 Euro Series held in Adria, Italy.
A member of the famed Mercedes-Benz Junior Team, Spengler started the 26-lap race from 6th place on the grid. "The standing start was fine but I collided with Nico Rosberg in the first corner," Spengler explained. "We arrive in this corner at top speed and we must brake very hard because it is very tight. Our two cars touched. I managed to keep my car going but Rosberg was forced to retire."
However, Spengler's car was damaged. "My front wing was smashed in the collision. It was hanging there but was not generating downforce anymore," said the 20-year old driver from St. Hippolyte, Quebec.
"I kept losing places and after ten laps or so, I decided to pit for a new front wing. I rejoined the fray after the repairs were completed and the car was running fine. I set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1 minute, 11.029 seconds." The Canadian racer was finally classified 20th, two laps down.
Having climbed through the field yesterday and established the fastest lap of the race today, Spengler is happy with the progress made by Mücke Motorsport. "I am happy with the changes. It is a big step forward in terms of speed. The car is now quite competitive. I really look forward to the next race."
The next two rounds will be held at the legendary Grand Prix of Pau, in southern France in two weeks.
