Another stunning drive for Spengler
BRUNO SPENGLER Montreal, Canada, May 15, 2004 -- Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler -- a works Mercedes-Benz driver -- drove another stunning race today in Round 5 of the hotly contested Euro Formula 3 Series held in Adria, Italy.
The 20-year old driver took the start of the race from 25th place and sliced through the field to cross the line in 7th position, scoring two additional championship points.
"It was raining this morning for our qualifying session," Spengler explained. "I took the track with my car fitted with rain tires. After four laps, I came in for slicks. We expected the track would dry but it stayed a bit wet. All other competitors remained on wet tires and ran faster lap times than me. My slick tires never generated enough grip and therefore I was the slowest of all..."
Spengler, driving his Dallara-Mercedes, started from 25th place, last on the grid. By the time of the race, the track was dry and the sun was shining. "I took another fantastic start and my car was running extremely well," said Spengler.
"I benefited from two collisions that happened in front of me and I passed all the other competitors, including Alexandre Premat, to cross the line in 7th place. I am very happy with my performance because the changes the team made to the car were very beneficial. The car is faster and also easier to drive."
The Canadian driver looks forward to another great race tomorrow. "Yes, but this time I will take the start from the front of the grid, in 6th place. I will do my best to make another great start!"
