Fourth place for Edoardo Mortara -- Vernay and Mailleux on row one
Wolfsburg (30 August 2008) Volkswagen driver Edoardo Mortara finished Saturday's race in the Formula 3 Euro Series at Brands Hatch in Southern England in fourth place, thus confirming his second place in the standings. The Italian from the Signature team started from eight place, advanced to fifth after a perfect start and gained another position halfway through the race.
The Frenchmen Franck Mailleux and Jean Karl Vernay, who are "powered by Volkswagen" and compete for the Signature team as well, scored further championship points by finishing seventh and eighth and now, respectively, rank in ninth and eleventh positions overall. Since the starting grid for the race on Sunday reflects the reverse order of the top eight in Saturday's race, Red Bull Junior Vernay and Mailleux will form the first row of the grid. Mortara will go into the 58-lap race from position five.
ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup
Razor-thin pole position for Steinhof - guest driver Sundar on third
Wolfsburg (30 August 2008) A premiere on position one: Maciek Steinhof (Poland) clinched his first ever pole position at the eighth round of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at Brands Hatch. With a razor-thin margin of three thousandths of a second he relegated Alexander Rambow (Zehdenick) to second place at the circuit on the outskirts of London. Indian youngster Ashwin Sundar, who normally contests the ADAC Formula Masters, shone with grid position three as a Polo Cup guest entrant. Maximilian Sandritter from Raubling finished the qualifying in ninth place as the best rookie, while leader of the standings Shane Williams delivered a disappointing 15th-place result. On the two-kilometre tradition-steeped circuit the South African did not manage to catch a free lap.
"I'm really, really happy: my first pole position is very special to me," said the overjoyed 22-year-old driver from Cracow. "On my fastest lap simply everything fit. Now I'm eager to find out what it feels like to start from pole." Alexander Rambow expressed satisfaction despite his narrow defeat. "At Brands Hatch a place on the first row of the grid is particularly important since overtaking is very difficult. Because it's likely to rain during the race the cards will be reshuffled anyhow." Ashwin Sundar has only one goal for the race: "I want to see the chequered flag. The Racing Polo and the circuit are both new to me and I was surprised myself about clinching third place on the grid." The 19-year-old normally contests formula races: "I've been fond of touring car races ever since I was a child. I feel really great in the Polo Cup."
