Bottas the quickest in first session at Brands Hatch
03.09.2010 - Valtteri Bottas (ART Grand Prix, 0:41.112 minutes) set the fastest lap time in the Formula 3 Euro Series' practice session. At Brands Hatch's short 1.929-kilometre Indy circuit, the Finn outpaced Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam, 0:41.220 minutes) and Edoardo Mortara (Signature, 0:41.243 minutes) who finished second and third respectively. The session had to be red-flagged twice.
Valtteri Bottas took the lead from previous leader Daniel Juncadella at the beginning of the session's second third. A short time later, Christopher Zanella (Motopark Academy, 0:42.466 minutes) just couldn't avoid hitting the guard rails, thus making for the first red flag of the weekend. The Swiss went off in Druids, lost control and hit the crash barrier to the right of the track.
When the session was restarted, Alexander Sims (ART Grand Prix, 0:41.476 minutes) made an effort to steal the lead but the only Briton on the Formula 3 Euro Series grid had to settle for temporarily holding third position, behind Bottas and Juncadella. At this point in time, the battle for the position at the very front was extremely close, with the Finn being just 0.015 seconds faster than the Spaniard who proved to be the fastest rookie.
In the closing stages of the session, Roberto Merhi (Mucke Motorsport, 0:41.508 minutes) spun after having dropped back to seventh as Laurens Vanthoor (Signature, 0:41.378 minutes) and Marco Wittmann (Signature, 0:41.433) had succeeded in outpacing the Spanish Mucke Motorsport driver. Merhi spun with just four more minutes to go and so, the race control opted for making an early end to the practice session.
At the end of the day, Valtteri Bottas secured the top position on the time sheets, 0.108 seconds ahead of Daniel Juncadella. Edoardo Mortara, the Formula 3 Euro Series Championship leader, came third, 0.131 seconds behind Bottas. Laurens Vanthoor, Marco Wittmann, Alexander Sims, Roberto Merhi, Matias Laine (Motopark Academy, 0:41.606 minutes), Carlos Muñoz (Mucke Motorsport, 0:41.608) and Nicolas Marroc (Prema Powerteam, 0:41.744) completed the top 10.
