MORTARA MISERABLE WITH THIRD GRID SLOT
BRANDS HATCH (GBR) 3 SEPTEMBER 2010: Edoardo Mortara was less than chuffed after posting the third quickest time in qualifying today at Brands Hatch.
The Formula 3 Euro Series leader struggled on his third set of tyres and, though he headed the timing monitors for much of the session, was pipped by team-mates Laurens Vanthoor and Marco Whittmann late in the session. Edo was unable to respond, for the session was red flagged seconds after the two rival Signature cars set the quicker times.
Once Jim Pla's ART was put right-side-up by the marshals down at Paddock Hill Bend, the remaining 2.39 minutes of the qualifying session were run, but traffic meant Mortara was unable to improve.
Grid position: 3 / Time: 0:40.804 (+0.108) / Conditions: Sunny and warm
EDOARDO MORTARA: "I'm a bit disappointed to be honest as we aren't where we should be today. I was quite quick on the second set of tyres, with which I set my fastest lap, but the third set changed the characteristics of the car and it was not fast enough. I was struggling with the balance. We need to analyze this, but we didn't change anything on the car between the second and third sets. That's weird, because you should improve on the third set. I was pushing really hard.
"Had we not had the red flag I think I could have improved, but I'm not sure it would have been enough.
"Qualifying is particularly vital at Brands Hatch's Indy circuit because overtaking is really impossible. You hope to make a good start, and that's all you can hope for. I'd be perfectly happy starting second, but third is going to make life difficult tomorrow. Still, with a good start anything is possible.
"Many congratulations to my team-mate and friend Laurens for his well deserved pole."
