2016 European F3 calendar confirmed

The World Motor Sport Council has confirmed a condensed 2016 FIA European Formula 3 calendar consisting of 10 race weekends.

The season will feature one less race event than 2015, with Hockenheim dropping from two race weekends to one next year.

The opener is pencilled in for 3 April at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, instead of Silverstone, which has been dropped. Hockenheim will stage the season finale on 16 October.

Along with Paul Ricard, the Hungaroring circuit is a new addition to the F3 calendar, as is Imola, with 2015 venues Monza and Portimao missing out along with Silverstone.

Chassis lifespan extended

The FIA has also extended the lifetime of the current Dallara chassis until the end of the 2019 season, keeping costs under control and allowing regional F3 projects to flourish.

The current chassis, which was introduced in 2012, will therefore have an eight-year life span, the longest ever for an F3 chassis.

Furthermore, a safety update kit will be introduced in 2017 or 2018, the details of which will be submitted to the June 2016 WMSC.
