Rene Rast has been named as Craig Lowndes’s replacement for next month’s Bathurst 12 Hour.
Lowndes was set to partner fellow V8 Supercars star Garth Tander and car owner Steve McLaughlin in a Melbourne Performance Centre-run Audi R8.
However, thanks to a broken collarbone sustained in a motorbiking accident last weekend, Lowndes will now miss the 12 Hour, with German ace Rast to be drafted in as a last-minute replacement.
“We had to find a replacement driver to share the car… the phone was pretty busy when Craig announced he was out yesterday,” explained Garth Tander.
“We’ve secured one of Audi’s top level factory drivers in Rene Rast. It’s huge shoes to fill, but when you talk about GT racing in Europe this guy is Number 1.
“It says a lot about the race and how it’s growing that Audi are prepared to send a guy like him out.”
The 2016 race will be Rast’s second at Mount Panorama; in 2014 he finished fifth in a Phoenix Racing R8 alongside Rahel Frey and Laurens Vanthoor.
