Nurburgring 24h: Mercedes closes on win after rivals hit trouble

After three quarters of the race Mercedes are in a very good position to win the 2016 Nurburgring 24h with their main rivals hitting trouble in the morning hours.

Group 2 race start
Group 1 race start
#46 TC-R & Vetter Motorsport, BMW E82: Thomas Ahles, Dierk Möller, Tom Moran, Rudi Adams
#88 Haribo Racing Team-AMG, Mercedes-AMG GT3: Uwe Alzen, Lance David Arnold; Maximilian Götz, Jan Seyffarth

While the #88 Haribo Mercedes, the #29 HTP Mercedes and the #4 and #9 Black Falcon Mercedes cars lead for the last couple of hours and changing position internally several times, Audi and BMW only recently lost their best placed cars.

The defending Nurburgring champions in the #1 WRT Audi retired with damage only minutes before the #28 Land Audi crashed into the #6 Phoenix Audi during a slow zone section with both cars too damaged to continue the race.

Almost exactly 18 hours into the race the #100 Schubert BMW was innocently collected in a crash involving several slower cars that were lapped by a competitor.

All this carnage leaves Mercedes in the best possible situation for the win, albeit the #912 Manthey Porsche plus the #23 Rowe BMW and the #2 WRT Audi remain in contention for the top spots. Also, there’s a strong chance for more rain during the late stages of the race.
