New Zealand will add a major GT endurance race to its motorsport calendar next year, with the announcement of the Hampton Downs 12 Hours.

#911 Walkinshaw GT3 Porsche 911 GT3-R: John Martin, Duvashen Padayachee

The race will form part of a new ‘Asia Pacific 36’ series, which will also include the Bathurst 12 Hour and the Sepang 12 Hours, which has been bumped from the Intercontinental GT Challenge schedule in favour of the Suzuka 10 Hours.

The Hampton Down event is likely to feature on the Australian Endurance Championship schedule as well, and should it keep a similar late October date as the current Hampton Downs 500 event it would be the opening round of a 2018/19 Asia Pacific 36 season, followed by Sepang in December and Bathurst in February.

“There is appeal in the concept of the Asia Pacific 36, and we support the idea,” said Bathurst 12 Hour Event Director John Casey.

“There are still details we need to work through and will do so with an understanding that it could commence in 2019.”

The Bathurst race will continue to be the opening round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge.
