No luck for Ehret at Spa-Francorchamps
"Farnbacher Racing" had to deal with technical problems during the second round of the Le Mans Series at Spa-Francorchamps. Besides problems with the fuel pump, a defective clutch stopped the race finally completely.
During free practice sessions Pierre Ehret and Dominik Farnbacher tried to find a first setup. Everything went alright until Farnbacher had a collision which was not his fault when an Aston Martin crashed into his Porsche. But damage could be repaired just in time to qualifying.
Timed practice took place on wet track which was the main reason for the 13th quickest time. Pierre Ehret: "Most of the drivers were out on slick tyres while our teammanager Horst Farnbacher adviced us to use intermediates. So we did. All drivers in front of us are those who decided for slicks. That's bad luck!"
In front of 30.000 spectators the second round was started on sunday. For the pilots it proved to be six varied hours of driving. Dominik Farnbacher drove the start stint with the Porsche 996 GT3 RSR. But the first lap was not yet over when the safety car came out first. An accident happened in which Farnbacher once again was invoveld innocently. This crash did not remain without consequences which became clear later on. About an hour after the actual start the race finally could be started again.
But after the first laps the Porsche had several dropouts. Slowly the car came back to the pits and even stopped completely for a moment. After the team refueled the car it resumed the race. But again Farnbacher came in after few laps with the same trouble. The car was refueled again and Pierre Ehret took over the steering wheel. He had the same dropouts. Finally one found the problem: Caused by the crash the fuel pump had got broken. "Therefore we had unnecessary pitstops and lost a lot of time", explained Ehret. But now Ehret could show his performance and was driving on rank six when the next problem came along: a defective clutch. After a repair of 60 minutes Farnbacher went out again, but after only two laps he came in to park the car definitely.
Pierre Ehret: "I want to forget this weekend quickly. There's nothing more to say. Even after the first problems we were still competitive. Rank four or five surely would have been possible. But it wasn't to be. The broken clutch put us over the edge!"
The next round will be held at Nurburgring on 15th/16th July where the team hopes for more luck.
