Morbidelli absolute ruler
Porimao's weekend in Portugal ended in the best possible way for ROAL Motorsport thanks to a solid en-plein scored by Gianni Morbidelli.
Since qualifying on Saturday the first positive signals emerged and the driver from Pesaro scored the pole position with a fastest lap time of 1'52''953, while the eleventh place on the grid obtained by Francesco Ascani (1'56''384) was a good starting point to aim at points.
In race one, Morbidelli did not concede anything to opponents and ruled from the first lap to the end of a race in which his leadership was never in doubt. He set also the fastest lap of the race. Good performance from Ascani too, seventh under the chequered flag.
The second race saw a great recovery from the reigning champion, started from the eighth place of the grid due to the grid inversion, Morbidelli recovered position after position with great determination and got the lead during the fifth lap. After that he kept the leadership authoritatively until the end of the race. Ascani had an early retirement instead, due to an accident.
The classification sees now Gianni Morbidelli second with 108 points, 22 adrift the leader Stefano Gabellini.
Roberto Ravaglia (ROAL Motorport, Team Principal):
"We are extremely satisfied by this result obtained on a very demanding track like Portimao. I sent my compliments to Morbidelli and to all men of Zerocinque Motorsport that work together with us in this project. We made a good step forward in classification that gives us further motivation for the season finale".
Next round of the Superstars championship is scheduled for 20 September at Vallelunga.
